Updates: Carter at 4 years & Ella at 18 months

We took the kids to see Dr. Nail yesterday for their well check ups. Carter's 4 year, Ella's 18 month. So I thought it was time to post a little update on each of the kids for these milestones. Settle in for a very long post! ;) No pictures this time, either.... sorry!!

Carter really did amazing at the doctor. He was a little nervous going in, but we reassured him that Dr. Nail is super nice and just going to check and make sure he is healthy and growing well, and that seemed to calm his nerves enough. After getting there, he was actually really excited to see the doctor. He was super friendly and talkative with him, followed all directions he was given, and was just overall the most perfect little patient. We were so proud of how he handled himself knowing that he started out so nervous. When it was time to get shots, he totally took it like a man.... no screaming, no tears, not even a whimper or a grimace. So proud of you little buddy!! (And on our way home, he told me numerous times how he was "so proud of himself"..... How cute is that?!). And, the best part.... no more shots until he is 11!!
  • You're 36 lbs 4 oz (53%) and 41.5 inches (76th percentile). Also, this is the first time they've given us a BMI for him. Carter's BMI is 14.8 (23%), which is in the healthy weight range. No doubt about it, you're a healthy, growing boy!
  • Scored great on his hearing and vision tests, and all other physical exams. Another A+. It goes without saying that we are so thankful to have such a healthy and thriving child. So, so blessed.
  • Current 4-year-old favs: Spiderman, Batman, Superman --- any and all superheros! Seek n Find books, riding his bike and scooter, playing with friends, watching movies, Playdoh, Angry Birds, Fruit Ninja, a letter/word tracing game and a matching game all on the tablet (he'd literally play for hours - we have to really limit him!!).
  • Still loves his school and teachers. He's always well-behaved, cooperative, and participates in all classroom activities. I'm glad that he saves his less desirable moments for us to handle at home rather than his teachers struggling with him.
  • He's always talking about God, Jesus, the Bible, and praying for others. I love this about him at this age. His curiosity of all those things definitely keep me on my toes! Sometimes he asks me questions that I'm not exactly sure how to answer on a 4 year old level! But, precious, nonetheless.
  • Carter is so sweet with his words, and I hope he is always this way. He will often times tell me, totally out of the blue, "Mommy, I love you." He gives sweet compliments, or let us know that he missed us while he was at school or we were gone.
  • He is really becoming a "kid" in the way that he gets excited about things. Baseball games, camping trips, fishing, spending the night with grandparents, special days at school. He's gaining a better concept of time, and is always counting down and looking forward to exciting things coming up!
  • We started going to a new church, and he was really excited to get to go to the preschool Sunday school class. When we picked him up, he said he met a new friend who was really nice and shared with him. I have fond memories of growing up in Sunday school, so I'm happy to start this with my kiddos.
  • We are still having our ups and downs with good behavior vs bad. He'll go several weeks and be overall really cooperative, helpful, and fairly easy to manage. Then someone flips a switch and it's the total opposite for a few weeks. Those hard weeks are tough on the whole family, but especially Mom since I get to deal with it 95% of the time. Right now, though, we're in a good stretch, and I'm happy, proud, and thankful for the vast improvements I've seen in him lately. Going to bed has been fairly easy, the arguing is minimal, and the fits and outbursts have become less and less.  Looking forward to seeing him mature more and more in his 4th year!
It's still hard to believe he is 4! He woke up on his 4th birthday, looked in the mirror, and said to me, "Mommy, I'm not big yet. I thought I'd be big when I was 4!" Love how his little mind works!! He was a little disappointed that he didn't "look big," but quickly got over it once we started getting dressed for his birthday party! We love you, Carter, every minute of every day, no matter what kind of silliness, fun, or challenges you throw our way!

*****************************************************************************************************

Ella, you're officially 1 1/2! You also did amazingly well at the doctor's office. You allowed Dr. Nail to listen to your chest, look in your ears and eyes, do your whole physical exam, without any protest whatsoever. Pretty impressive for that age, even Dr. Nail said so (he said he goes into 15 and 18 month check ups ready for war, haha)! And when it came time for the finger prick from the nurse, you just looked her up and down with a little grimace and whispered one little word while she was squeezing your little finger.... "ouch." That was it! No crying or fits at all, and we were so proud of you! Also, it should be noted that your sweet big brother was your biggest cheerleader, and was ready and willing to comfort you when needed. He kept brushing your hair with his and saying, "don't worry, it'll be okay." And when it was all over he proudly declared, "You did so good, Ella!!" What a sweet boy he is. Anyway, here is what you're up to lately!
  • You're 22 lbs 10 oz (49%) and 31.5 inches (37%).
  • Size 18 months and/or 12-18 month clothes. Some 24 month, but very few.
  • Size 4-5 shoe.... your feet are TINY!
  • You're talking up a storm! Basically, you talk like your 4 year old brother, and it's hilarious. Some examples of the very grown up things you say: You answer "mmmm hmmmmm," "nope" or "okay," and if I ask you a questions, you think about it first with an "Ummmmm" and THEN you answer me. You sound so grown up at just 18 months, and I know it's because of listening to Carter.
  • You love to go around the room and quickly name people as you see them. You often do this at the dinner table. "Daddy, Mommy, Cawa (Carter), Ewa (Ella), Stowie (Stormie)...." the other day you included Nana and Mimi, too, because they were over. :)
  • You have recently started saying "Love you"..... and I love hearing that!!
  • Most common phrases I hear from you: Uh oh, Hi or Hello, Good girl, I did it!, Good job, We're home! (always in the car!), Sorry, again, and diaper change.
  • Speaking of "diaper change".... you are definitely ready to be officially potty trained! You go #2 in the big potty about 85% of the time, so we feel like we can tackle #1 and big girl panties very soon. We have plans to do 3-day potty training with you in June! I know you'll do great!
  • When I ask you how old you are, you still enthusiastically answer "TWO!!" So cute.
  • You love to read books, watch Minnie Mouse, play food or tea party, play with your babies and play outside.
  • Favorite foods are pancakes, eggs, blueberries, bananas, edamame, cheese, carrots, and pinto beans. You're not nearly as big of a "meat eater" as Carter is, but you do eat chicken, ham, hot dogs or sausage a little bit.
  • You're obsessed with babies lately. You get so excited when you see anyone pushing a stroller, even if you can't see the baby inside. You're definitely a 'little Mommy.' :)
  • Still a pretty big Momma's girl, and I'm still ok with that!
  • You are very loving. You always come and give hugs and snuggles, or just lay your head down in my lap or on my shoulder.
  • To say that you are "prissy" is somewhat of an understatement. But in the cutest way possible -- You swing your little booty and arms back and forth when you walk/run, and it makes me giggle every time.
  • You love Stormie right now. You always help me get her in the crate when it's time to go... you chase her to it yelling, "Go, go! Stormie, go!!" You also love to watch her her play with her rope toy... you think that is pretty funny! And, of course, you love to feed her from the highchair. :/
  • You recently made it to your very first sporting event, a Frisco Rough Riders game, the night before Carter's party. You seemed to enjoy looking around and watching everything, especially the players and the mascots that walked around. You even made it for the fireworks after the game! These definitely made you nervous, but you were a trooper.
These past 18 months have just flown by! You fill our hearts with joy and our home with laughter..... We just love you so much!! You'll be the big T-W-O before we know it!

  1. Just got off the phone with Mimi. She needed to tell me how good your kiddos had done at the doctor. Love Carter's idea about being 4 and looking older. You probably get tired of the comparison but Ella is developing as her Nana did. Arlene was about Ella's age during the 1955 elections. Your Grandaddy Arleigh taught her when asked, "What are you" to respond, "I'm a democrat." There was nothing she would not say. Also, Ella's age when she told Uncle Clay, "Dern it, Clay, I want a root beer!" Your mom was 1 year 6 months and 16 days when she stated her need for root beer as they drove by the root beer stand in McKinney.
